Who We Are
CAN is a 501c3, non-profit, foster based program which currently serves approximately 45 dogs and puppies. WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER. All animals in our program receive necessary vaccinations, tests, treatments or surgeries, are spayed or neutered and microchipped before being adopted.
"COURTESY LISTINGS" - PLEASE USE THE LINK TO COMPANION ANIMAL FRIENDS. We have several dogs on this website that are posted as a "courtesy" to community members that have found a stray dog or have rescued a dog on their own and need assistance in finding the "perfect" home for that pet. These dogs are not in our control, but we will do everything possible to assist in getting these animals adopted.
One of the advantages of having our dogs in private homes is that we know how they react inside our foster homes, learn their personalities and generally how they interact with other dogs, children and, depending upon the individual home, with cats.
Our volunteers give freely of their time, money, and affection to save these animals. Please keep in mind that they are ALL volunteers - no one gets paid, and we all have full-time jobs, families, and responsibilities. Please be patient if we cannot answer you immediately - we do strive to respond within 24 hours to all inquiries.
CAN is always in need of more loving foster homes. If you are interested please contact us at can.adoptions@yahoo.com.
Adopting a friend
ADOPTION PROCEDURE AND GUIDELINES: Upon request, we will send an adoption application, which must be completed and returned via email or fax to 972.692.5461.
We require a vet reference (or two personal references).
If you are in a home we do require that you have a fence. We do not approve of "invisible fences" and are willing to explain why.
We are happy to place dogs in apartments or condos depending upon the needs of the dog and the amount of exercise the dog would get.
Our review process will take generally 2-4 days.
Upon approval of the application, we will arrange a home visit and bring the dog to your home for an introduction to existing pets. We do not leave the pet on this visit, but prefer to allow both parties to decide if this is the right match.
If the adoption goes forward, there is a legally binding adoption contract to be signed. THE ADOPTION IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL THE SIGNED CONTRACT AND ADOPTION FEE ARE RECEIVED AND ANY SPECIAL PROVISIONS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
PLEASE NOTE: We do not adopt puppies or small dogs (under 25 pounds) to families with children under six years of age.
The adoption fee for adult, mixed breed dogs is $150; the fee for adult dogs over 6 years of age is $100; the fee for a pure bred dog is $200. The adoption fee for fully vetted puppies (under 6 months of age) is $175.00. To find out more about adopting one of our pets please email can.adoptions@yahoo.com.
Please consider adopting an adult or senior dog. These dogs are too often overlooked, when they make the easiest, most rewarding companions. In almost all cases, these dogs are already housetrained and no longer chew. It is a myth that an older dog cannot be retrained or fit into a different lifestyle. All they need is patience and caring. These dogs are more content to wait quietly for you to come home from work. These dogs are so very grateful for the love and attention - their only wish is for someone to love them and care for them.
WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER. All of our animals are in foster care. You may email can.adoptions@yahoo.com with any questions or to schedule an appointment to meet one of our pets.
